Its main purpose is to offer drinking water to all of Istria. Its main purpose is to supply the population with water, serves to retain water waves and for irrigation. It is not allowed on the lake to swim or fish.
The lake was built in the 1988. The main streams of the lake Butoniga are Draguc and Račički Lake Butoniga is at an altitude between 40 and 500 meters. Surface is 73 km2. The lake area at normal backflow is 2.45 km2. Overflow threshold is 41 meters above sea level.
